VERBAL/LINGUISTIC SKILLS ACTIVITY

LEARNER PREPARATION:

For this activity, students should be able to identify an interview candidate who has at least 10 years of experience, working in Lubbock.  The student must be inquisitive while feeling comfortable in conversation with this person.  They must also be proficient with a tape recorder and Microsoft Word.

OBJECTIVES:

This activity is designed to give students a first hand account and personal understanding of the jobs that exist in the Lubbock, TX economy.

MEDIA AND MATERIALS:

To conduct this activity, students will need access to a word processing application, such as Microsoft Word and a tape recorder with microphone.

USE OF RESOURCES:

Students will use these materials and resources to conduct and document an oral interview.

LEARNER PARTICIPATION:

Students will be expected to select an interviewee and develop a list of 6-7 interview questions.  These questions are open to the students' discretion but, are expected to be geared toward getting a better understanding of the subject's job description and how their job and industry fit into the Lubbock economy.  The questions should also be open-ended, allowing the interviewer to elaborate where necessary.

The students will then set up an appointment with their interviewee.  The interview will be taped using the tape recorder and microphone.  After the interview, the students will develop manuscripts of their interview using Microsoft Word or another word processing program.

The students will then prepare and present highlights of their interview to the rest of the class.

EVALUATION OF LESSON:

Students should remit a hard copy of their questions, the manuscript, and the original tape (which will be returned).  The teacher will use a multidimensional approach to assess the interview process, including the selection of the interviewee and preparation of the questions.  The teacher will also assess the relevance and quality of the content of the written manuscript.  Teachers can assess if students have grasped an understanding of their subject's occupation through the student's comfort level during the oral presentation.  True knowledge of the subject matter will be evident.
