For this activity, students should be prepared to organize large amounts of information into logical pieces.  They should be resourceful and capable of conducting extensive research.

OBJECTIVE:

This activity is designed to introduce students to the business cycle.  They will explore the patterned variations in stock prices and employment rates for local businesses.  Students will also sharpen their data analysis and presentation skills.

MEDIA AND MATERIALS:

~ Lubbock Top Ten Employers

~ Company Websites

~ Microsoft Excel or comparable spreadsheet application

~ Microsoft Powerpoint

~ LCD Projector

USE OF RESOURCES:

Students will use the Internet resources to research stock prices and employment rates.  The spreadsheet application will be used to analyze the data.  Powerpoint and the LCD projector will be used in an oral presentation.

LEARNER PARTICIPATION:

In groups of 3 and 4, students will choose 5 businesses from the top ten employers list for this activity.  They will research historical stock prices and local employment rates on a quarterly basis.  After gathering and compiling this data, students will create bar graphs or line graphs (their choice) to represent the data.  The goal is to find patterns in the data that show correlations between seasons and the two variables across the 5 businesses.  Students will summarize their findings in a Powerpoint Presentation.  They will present their findings and conclusions to the class.

EVALUATION OF LESSON:

Students will be assessed based on their ability to work well within their group and their ability to organize and form meaningful conclusions from the data that they collect.  It is also important to assess their ability to convey their findings through their presentations.  Teacher will comment on the Powerpoint Presentation.
