THE LUBBOCK, TX ECONOMY:

AN INTERDISCIPLINARY UNIT PLAN

Dear Teacher,

This website presents a comprehensive unit plan by which to teach high school students about the local economy in Lubbock, TX.  Students will learn about businesses, jobs, and other economic factors in Lubbock, TX through activities related to the multiple intelligences.  Students will be able to intelligently describe the type of companies, businesses, and jobs that contribute to the Lubbock economy.  Additionally, they will be able to describe the contributions in terms of factors such as employment, revenue, stock price, and marketing effectiveness and understand how these different factors relate to each other.  The plan includes many types of activities that are based on the Theory of Multiple Intelligences, while incorporating a wide variety of technology to promote active and meaningful learning for the students.

This unit addresses learning activities through the following modules:

These activities may be conducted in series (if you have allotted a longer period of time to cover the economy unit) or concurrently, allowing the students to choose which 2 or 3 activities they participate in.

This unit will be an exciting one for you and your students.  Each of them will have an opportunity to participate in at least one activity through which they learn most effectively.  The wide range of activities will also encourage students to express themselves and utilize some higher order thinking skills.

Although this unit is created for exploration of the Lubbock, TX economy, the activities can be used for any other city of choice or expanded to the national economy, if desired.

Please enjoy conducting this unit with your students, as it is meant to be fun.  I challenge you to become a facilitator of learning in contrast to the traditional teacher model that merely serves as a source of information.  Keep an open mind as students may interpret the activities in very creative, unique ways.

HAPPY LEARNING!
